One style, still available today and shown above, is nicknamed the “Palm Beach” when the First Lady wore the flat whip-stitched thong sandals to a Good Friday church service there. Some debate the origin of this sandal—Steve Bonnano versus Jack Rogers—but regardless the First Lady had these sandals in a variety of colors and styles, mixing them with shift dresses or Capri pants while enjoying her off-duty time.

HYANNISPORT — Friends and neighbors walked, jogged and lazed yesterday around the Kennedy family compound — something of a deep breath after three days, and 60 years, of suffocating in the national spotlight.

By noontime, the swarm of media representatives who had filled the streets earlier this week had moved on, and the police presence relocated. But even as the flood of visitors slowed to a trickle, rumors of plans to turn the compound into a museum or memorial site left residents wondering about the future of the neighborhood.

The homes in the compound which could comprise a museum include:

Spurred by a move from representatives of the Kennedy family to subdivide the property, speculation is rampant that the family, per the wishes of the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, could turn portions of the compound over to a nonprofit group for use as a museum, a memorial or an education center.

Kennedy representatives and associates could not be reached yesterday for comment.

"You hear all these rumors, and you're not sure what to think," said Deborah Converse, president of the Hyannis Area Chamber of Commerce.

"There's so much history to that place," she said. "It would be a fabulous place to visit. But I don't really know if the community is built for it. ... We'll have to see what happens."

Piece of American history

Some neighbors walking by the compound applauded the idea as an appropriate tribute to the fallen senator and his family, including brothers President John F. Kennedy and Sen. Robert Kennedy, both of whom had homes at the compound.

"That (compound) is a piece of American history," said Dennis Shea, of nearby Scudder Avenue. "People would like to know what's in there. I'd like to see inside myself."

But others, both neighbors and local community leaders, expressed concerns about taking the home from Kennedy hands.

The compound, in the family for more than 80 years, consists of three white clapboard master homes and two guest houses on 6 acres at the edge of Nantucket Sound.
Joseph and Rose Kennedy, parents to John, Robert and Edward, purchased the first home, at 50 Marchant Ave., in 1928. Ted Kennedy and his second wife, Victoria Reggie Kennedy, inhabited that home most recently.

Ted Kennedy added the second home, at 28 Marchant Ave., in 1955, selling it to his brother Robert and Robert's wife, Ethel, in 1961.

Finally, John Kennedy bought the third home, at 111 Irving Ave., in 1956 before he ascended to the presidency.

Residential neighborhood

"I just think it should stay in the family," Mick Carlon of Hyannisport said yesterday as he walked past the compound. "It has meant so much to the family for so long. It just wouldn't feel right" if it belonged to someone else.

A full-scale museum would not fit right, either, into the small, residential community that inhabits the seaside neighborhood, others said yesterday.

Any changes to the home would have to meet town zoning codes, but because the properties fall in the Hyannisport Historic District, changes also would have to go before the town historic commission, and possibly the Cape Cod Commission for approval, according to historic commission chairwoman Barbara Flinn.

"Hyannisport is a village, and it's a very small one," said Rebecca Pierce-Merrick, co-founder and curator of the John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum on Main Street. "It doesn't have the roads, the parking. ... (A museum) doesn't really fit in a community like that.
"It'll be interesting to see what comes of it, but for now, it's a private home. I hope that people can respect that."

Highlighting this is the other major story -- the transformation of the Kennedy Compound into a museum -- to emerge from the Kennedy funeral. "Rose [Kennedy] wanted to turn the place over to the Benedictine monks before she died," Benedict Fitzgerald, the late Kennedy matriarch's personal attorney, told author Ed Klein for his book Ted Kennedy: The Dream That Never Died. "I drew up the legal papers for her on my front porch. But when Ted found out about it, he ripped the thing in half. There was no way he was going to have the place turned into a monastery." Instead, as Fox News reported, "The Kennedy compound in Hyannis, Mass. will be converted into an educational center and museum as a tribute to the late Sen. Edward Kennedy."

In the latter years of her life, Jackie reached out to people who interested her--like Joe Armstrong, a young Texan from Abilene, who had rescued 'Rolling Stone' magazine from obscurity in the early 1970's. When Jackie heard the story of how he raised staff morale by putting on a song 'Dropkick Me Jesus (Through the Goalposts of Life)' and directing the speaker out of the window on to Park Avenue, "she broke into laughter so hard that she cried and said, 'Get me Joe Armstrong's telephone number!' says Armstrong. A "Compound" Problem--Kennedy Estate in Hyannisport May Become a Museum

HYANNIS PORT - For three generations, the Kennedy family has spent countless hours here tossing footballs on the beach, sailing near their collection of cottages, and producing iconic photos fit for Life magazine. They have mourned losses of loved ones in the most public fashion, and they have celebrated marriages, births, and political victories. But the death of Senator Edward M. Kennedy, who for decades has been the glue that held the family together, closes a chapter of a storybook Camelot tale that has flourished at the end of Marchant Avenue.

Much of the Kennedy compound will probably be turned over to a national nonprofit group, possibly to be opened up as a museum or retreat center.
“My understanding is the senator wants that property to go to the public,’’ said someone close to the Kennedy family, who asked for anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue. “He wants it to be a historic property, similar to Franklin Roosevelt’s home in Hyde Park.’’

The property, long seen as a holy site of Democratic politics, is located in a small village that has captivating views of Nantucket Sound. It is a place where bikes lie in front yards, where bougainvillea and rose bushes flutter against white picket fences, where the ocean breeze carries a salty mist.

It is where political campaigns and raceboat victories were hatched, where Senator Kennedy tossed tennis balls to his Portuguese water dogs, Sonny and Splash, where he set sail on his wooden schooner, Mya.

“It’s a place where he always gained strength,’’ said Paul G. Kirk Jr., a former Kennedy aide who is chairman of the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation. “If you want to use a naval analogy, that’s his anchor.’’

Joseph P. Kennedy began renting the house, with its wide veranda and ocean views, in 1926. He bought it three years later and enlarged it to fit the large family. Two of his sons, John and Robert, purchased their own homes next door when they got older, and for 80 years the rambling white houses by the sea have been the scene of numerous moments fit for the history books.

It was in Robert’s cottage that President Kennedy and his aides watched the returns on election night. The next morning he rode in a white Lincoln to give his victory speech from the Hyannis Armory. That afternoon, they played touch football on the lawn. (Bobby’s team beat Jack’s by a single touchdown.)

The family gathered here to grieve on Thanksgiving Day in 1963, days after President Kennedy was assassinated. Senator Kennedy returned to the compound in 1969 after the funeral of Mary Jo Kopechne, emotionally shattered and prepared to resign his Senate seat and give up politics.

It was during a walk on the beach that his most trusted aide, David Burke, persuaded him to remain in the Senate and try to put the Chappaquiddick incident behind him.

When John F. Kennedy Jr.’s plane crashed into the ocean off Martha’s Vineyard, three priests celebrated Mass under a white tent that had been installed on the lawn for the wedding of Bobby Kennedy’s youngest child, Rory. It was Senator Kennedy who held a chalice of Communion wine while one of the priests distributed Eucharistic wafers.

“You would go to the house to drop him off, and he would be in this big rambling home, essentially by himself,’’ said one former Kennedy aide. “There were all these pictures on the walls of his dead relatives, who died too early.

The aide added: “He’s lived variously in an apartment in the Ritz; he’s got a house in Marlborough Street [in the Back Bay in Boston]; he’s got the house in Washington. But this is clearly home.’’

Because of all that history, the place is half museum and half home. In the living room, there is a couch where Rose installed a plaque to note that Cardinal Eugenio Pacelli once sat on it; he later became Pope Pius XII.

“It’s absolutely the home base for all the Kennedy family, and I think it’s been enormously significant to them and to the country,’’ said Philip W. Johnston, a longtime friend of the Kennedys. “We all think of it in a historical context, but they think of it as simply home.’’
Every year at Thanksgiving - rain or shine, warm or cold - the family goes out to sail. A group of close family friends is invited over for a meal, often accompanied by a Christmas singalong.
“The Kennedys know how to have a good party,’’ Johnston said, “which is why everybody always go back.’’

Every year, tourists make the pilgrimage to Hyannis, hoping for a glimpse of the Kennedys, a taste of their way of life. They sail into the harbor for a better look at the home.
They stop by St. Francis Xavier Church and view the pew where a plaque marks where the president sat for Mass, at the end of the row, if a quick getaway was needed.
Before the stockade fence went up years ago, people would rip shingles off the sides of the houses. Visitors would grab dirt and grass.

“It just has this mystique,’’ said Paul Traub, a 58-year-old economist from Michigan who was visiting the John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum, which showcases the family’s ties to Cape Cod. “Hyannis just sticks out in your mind, because of the family and the compound.’’
The guestbook at the JFK Museum along Main Street includes entries from Italy to Iowa, from Brazil to Boston. “You almost feel like you’re looking over the fence, to see these people and how they’re living,’’ said Jeff Cohen, a 47-year-old investment banker from Albany, N.Y. “It’s a living dynasty.’’

But with the death of the last son of Rose and Joe Kennedy, a piece of that dynasty ends. Ethel Kennedy, the wife of the late Robert F. Kennedy, still lives in a home on the compound. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger of California and his wife, Maria Shriver, own a home about a block away, as does her brother Robert.
But without Teddy - the freckle-faced little brother who became the patriarch known as the Grand Fromage (French for “the big cheese’’) - something will be missing.
“Obviously it will be a significant change for the family, because the family’s love for him is as much an attraction to a physical place as to the residents and its history,’’ Kirk said. “It’s going to be different; there’s no denying that.’’

Jackie Kennedy once described her White House dressing room as "the only place I can really relax, read and write." She felt it's decor truly reflected her personality and aesthetic--elegant, romantic, familiar and soothing--and she filled it with family photos and french antiques, pale blue raw silk fabrics and leopard prints. (Interestingly enough, a blue chaise lounge like Jackie's--see second photo from bottom--can be purchased online at Target for $449.99) Also, like many of her later homes, the dressing room also contained a simple bulletin board with personal notes and pictures tacked onto it.

I found the wardrobe painted with images from throughout Jackie's life particularly fascinating. She told visitors the images represented "the most important events in my life" and seeing them gives some insight into what Jackie truly cherished.

Together, Jackie and french decorator, Monsieur Stephane Boudin, commissioned French artist Pierre-Marie Rudelle to create the painted trompe l'oeil doors in her White House dressing room. The only direction they gave to Rudelle were to recreate some of the photos they provided him--telling him they were "Jackie's favorite things." With Jackie looking on, the images Rudelle painted included:

- A 1935 photo of Jackie with her father after she won a rosette in a Long Island horse show

- Profiles in Courage bookjacket

- A "Look" magazine photo of her taking a tumble off her horse, "Bit of Irish"

- Her watercolor painting of the White House

- Daisies given to her by her sister

- A portrait of Caroline Kennedy as an infant

It's been awhile but I believe the wardrobe is still on display at the JFK Presidential Library and Museum. I've been asked if it was sold at one of the Sotheby's Auctions--and can't be 100% certain as I don't have the catalog with me--but don't think it was. If anyone knows, it would be great to have this information! Also, if anyone has a better shot of the wardrobe which more clearly shows the drawings on it, please let me know!

Story Behind Warhol's Autographed Nude Jackie Photo

When I heard a nude photo of Jackie had been found among artist Andy Warhol's things by an archivist, I wondered if she'd posed for him. It seemed unlikely given how upset she was when Larry Flynt printed nude photos of her on Skorpios in his magazine, "Hustler."

Well, here's the story according to one of the archivists working on Warhol's estate:

And how did Warhol come to possess a naked poster of Jackie O signed, "For Andy, with enduring affection, Jackie Montauk"?

As it happens, says Wrbican – who along with other researchers authenticated the signature through handwriting comparisons – Onassis was a frequent visitor to Warhol's Montauk, N.Y., beachfront estate.

So, after her second husband, Aristotle Socrates Onassis, got a paparazzi to take pictures of her skinny-dipping and it landed in the hands of Larry Flint, who turned it into a poster for his porn magazine, Hustler, Jackie O sent a copy – likely as a joke – to Warhol, Wrbican said.
"I really doubted it was her signature at first," he says. "But it really matches her writing."

So it's not a "new" nude after all, nor is it Warhol's work. It's one of the photos from "Hustler" and Jackie apparently had more of a sense of humor about it than some of her biographers have opined.

The Ultimate Jackie Daiquiri--Her Recipe!

Jackie's Daiquiri

2 parts rum

2 parts frozen limeade

1 part fresh lime juice

Add a few drops of Falernum (artificial sweetener like Sweet n' Low) to taste

Jackie usually had one as her pre-dinner drink with Jack and liked it to be "not too sweet; if you are unsure, use no more than three drops of sweetener and it should be fine."

No one else looked like her, spoke like her, wrote like her, or was so original in the way she did things. No one we knew ever had a better sense of self.

Eight months before she married Jack, they went together to President Eisenhower’s Inaugural Ball. Jackie said later that that’s where they decided they liked inaugurations.
No one ever gave more meaning to the title of "First Lady." The nation’s capital city looks as it does because of her. She saved Lafayette Square and Pennsylvania Avenue. The National Cultural Center was her cause before it was The Kennedy Center. Jackie brought the greatest artists to the White House, and brought the arts to the center of national attention. Today, in large part because of her inspiration and vision, the arts are an abiding part of national policy.
President Kennedy took such delight in her brilliance and her spirit. At a White House dinner, he once leaned over and told the wife of the French Ambassador, “Jackie speaks fluent French. But I only understand one out of every five words she says -- and that word is "DeGaulle.”
And then, during those four endless days in 1963, she held us together as a family and a country. In large part because of her, we could grieve and then go on. She lifted us up, and in the doubt and darkness, she gave her fellow citizens back their pride as Americans. She was then 34 years old.

Afterward, as the eternal flame she lit flickered in the autumn of Arlington Cemetery, Jack[ie] went on to do what she most wanted -- to raise Caroline and John, and warm her family’s life and that of all the Kennedys.
Robert Kennedy sustained her, and she helped make it possible for Bobby to continue. She kept Jack[’s] memory alive and he carried Jack’s mission on.
Her two children turned out to be extraordinary: honest, unspoiled, and with a character equal to hers. And she did it in the most trying circumstances. They are her two miracles.
Her love for Caroline and John was deep and unqualified. She reveled in their accomplishments; she hurt with their sorrows; she felt sheer joy and delight in spending time with them. At the mere mention of one of their names, Jackie’s eyes would shine brighter and her smile would grow bigger. She once said that if you “bungle raising your children nothing else much matters in life.” She didn’t bungle. Once again, she showed how to do the most important thing of all, and do it right.

When she went to work, Jackie became a respected professional in the world of publishing. And because of her, remarkable books came to life. And she searched out new authors and ideas. She was interested in everything. Her love of history became a devotion to historic preservation. You knew, when Jackie joined the cause to save a building in Manhattan, the bulldozers might as well turn around and go home.

She had a wonderful sense of humor -- a way of focusing on someone with total attention -- and a little girl delight in who they were and what they were saying. It was a gift of herself that she gave to others. And in spite of all of her heartache and loss, she never faltered.

I often think of what she said about Jack in December after he died: "They made him a legend, when he would have preferred to be a man." Jackie would have preferred to be just herself, but the world insisted that she be a legend too. She never wanted public notice -- in part I think, because it brought back painful memories of unbearable sorrow endured in the glare of a million lights. In all the years since then, her genuineness and depth of character continued to shine through the privacy, and reach people everywhere.

Jackie was too young to be a widow in 1963, and too young to die now. Her grandchildren were bringing new joy to her life, a joy that illuminated her face whenever you saw them together. Whether it was taking Rose and Tatiana for an ice cream cone, or taking a walk in Central Park with little Jack as she did last Sunday, she relished being "Grandjackie" and showering her grandchildren with love.

At the end, she worried more about us than herself. She let her family and friends know she was thinking of them. How cherished were those wonderful notes in her distinctive hand on her powder blue stationary. In truth, she did everything she could -- and more -- for each of us. She made a rare and noble contribution to the American spirit. But for us, most of all she was a magnificent wife, a mother, a grandmother, a sister, aunt, and friend.

She graced our history. And for those of us who knew and loved her -- she graced our lives.

One totem of their anguish hangs in family patriarch Ted Kennedy's private Senate office. On a piece of lined school paper, Caroline's youngest, who was John Jr.'s nephew and godson, wrote, "Dear Uncle Teddy, Will you be my godfather now? Love, Jack." It hangs next to a note that JFK penned as a prep school student: "Dear Mom and Dad, It is the night before exams so I will write more later. Love, Jack. P.S. Can I be godfather to the baby [Teddy]?" The answer was yes.

After her two experiences as the wife of rich men, Jackie was determined not to repeat it. Once, in these years, she said to her friend Aileen Mehle, "Suzy," "Why don't you write about all these very prominent social women who have married vast fortunes and who are envied high and low? How everything seems wonderful on the surface but underneath life is hell, hell, hell....."And I thought," Suzy said, "Et tu, Jackie?"

Aileen/Suzy also had the opportunity to witness firsthand just how awful Jackie's life could be during her marriage to Ari Onassis. She recounts an incident at a luncheon in Florida when Ari was "downright hostile" toward his wife. "It was no surprise to see Onassis looking rumpled as usual but Jackie had obviously been to hell and back. She wore no makeup, an unbecoming cotton dress and an odd cotton scarf tied at four corners completely covering her hair. Assured of an audience, Onassis turned on her. "Look at you!" he shouted. "How can you be seen looking like that? You don't see Aileen and Gloria (Guiness, the hostess) in that kind of get-up. What is your problem?" For a moment a look of hurt and sadness crossed Jackie's face, then she deflected the situation by smiling brightly "Yes, don't they look great?" Her "problem" was staring her in the face--her husband who by now was drunk on red wine and had stumbled to the beach, curled up in a fetal position sleeping soundly.

I think--and this is my personal opinion--the way Jackie handled this hurtful situation, by complimenting the women her husband was using to criticize her, is one of the reasons she is such an enduring icon of style and, even more importantly, grace. She seldom showed her pain, rose above the in your face philandering of two husbands, and, during her marriage to Onassis, tried--even after his depression when his son died--to ignore the way he would lash out at her and comfort him, no matter what he said or did. She earned the admiration she received--not just for the way she comported herself through the President's funeral but throughout her life, always trying her best to focus on the positive.

Shortly before his death in November 1963, President John F. Kennedy purchased a stunning 47 carat kunzite ring for his wife. His plan was to give it to Jackie to celebrate their 10th Christmas together. After his assassination, a friend who'd been holding on to the ring for safekeeping presented it to the President's widow. It has been reported she refused to take it off for a very long time because of its sentimental value. In 1996, Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg and John F. Kennedy Jr. included the ring in the first Sotheby's auction where it sold for more than $420,000.00 (appraised at $8,000).

There is another story circulating about the ring and that is then-Senator Kennedy gave a kunzite ring to Jackie for their engagement, later replacing it with an emerald and diamond ring. In fact, neither Jack nor Jackie were involved in the purchase of her engagement setting. That honor belonged to Joe Kennedy, Jack's father, who selected it after looking at a tray of bands at his favorite jeweler, Van Cleef & Arpels.

Montezuma, emperor of the Aztecs, poured his liquid chocolate over bowls of snow from nearby mountaintops before whipping the mixture into a chilled froth. Five centuries later, a trio of adventurous New York City restaurateurs concocted an icy, wickedly rich confection, keeping its formula a well-guarded secret and thus guaranteeing a faithful following for the legendary dessert. Stephen Bruce, who founded Serendipity 3 with two partners in 1954, was badgered and begged for his recipe, but for decades he refused to budge - not even for the first lady Jackie Kennedy, who wanted to serve the dessert at a White House function. On the occasion of Serendipity's fiftieth anniversary, however, he finally spilled the beans. Frozen Hot Chocolate, it turns out, gets its complex flavor from a dozen different cocoas that are blended with crushed ice to the consistency of a frozen daiquiri. While an authentic reproduction would call for assembling 1/2 ounce of all twelve cocoas, this version is a little more user-friendly. Whether sipped through a straw or eaten with a spoon, it's a sweet invitation to childhood.

Ingredients:

Ganache: 3 ounces unsweetened cocoa 3 ounces sweetened cocoa 1 1/2 tablespoons sugar 1 tablespoon unsalted butter 1/2 cup whole milk
Hot Chocolate: 1 cup whole milk 2 cups crushed ice basic whipped cream chocolate shavings for serving

Instructions:

Makes 1 Large Serving
To make the ganache, in the top of a double boiler over boiling water, combine the cocoas, sugar, and butter and melt until it forms a smooth paste. Slowly drizzle the milk into the chocolate mixture, stirring constantly until thoroughly blended and smooth as silk. Cool to room temperature.

To make the drink, combine 1/2 cup of the ganache with the milk and crushed ice in a blender and blend on high speed until the mixture if the consistency of a frozen daiquiri. Pour into a large goblet, top with a mound of whipped cream, and sprinkle with chocolate shavings. Serve with 2 straws for sipping and an iced tea spoon for devouring.

Remembering Eunice Kennedy Shriver

Jackie's relationships with the other Kennedy women didn't start out on the right note (they made fun of her "babykins" voice, large feet and caviar and wine picnic lunches). With time, however, they grew closer and their grief at Jackie's death as captured in photos taken the day of her funeral is palpable. Remembering her sister-in-law, Eunice Kennedy Shriver spoke these words: “For us-and to my wonderful and big, extended family-Jackie always reminded us that loyalty to one another was to be fiercely practiced and protected. To America, she embodied the beauty of art, of music, of design, and, more than anything, the beauty of family. These were her gifts to us and to the world...”

Eunice Shriver died early this morning surrounded by her husband, children and grandchildren. I hadn't really thought much about it before but she was one of the last three living children of Joe and Rose Kennedy. Now, only Jean Kennedy Smith and Senator Ted Kennedy remain along with a handful of surviving spouses--Ethel (Bobby), Sargent (Eunice), Joan and Victoria (Ted).

Barbara Gibson, Rose Kennedy's secretary, profiled Eunice in her book "Life with Rose Kennedy" and I think parts of it are worth sharing: "Eunice was the one most like her mother and they were very close. Eunice's need to stay active every waking moment of her life struck others as obsessive. It was as if she were competing not really with others, but with something inside herself; it seemed she was trying to prove something to herself all the time.....Nonetheless, she was always a devoted daughter and excellent mother who was never fazed by life. When she was running late one Sunday morning and Rose left for Mass without her, Eunice walked out onto Ocean Boulevard (this was in West Palm Beach) and stopped traffic until she found a ride. The driver who took her to church was dumbfounded; Eunice didn't give it a second thought."

Jacqueline Kennedy Coat Worn at Swearing In Ceremony

While recuperating from John's birth, Jacqueline Kennedy and designer Oleg Cassini conspired to create an outfit that would really stand out at President Kennedy's swearing in ceremony. Cassini later said "she knew that most of the ladies would be wearing fur coats and didn't want to blend in." They also felt wearing a fabric coat would be more youthful and au courant. By the way, the official color for this coat was "greige," which would later become one of Jacqueline Kennedy's favorite hues--a mix of grey and beige.

Jackie did indeed capture the nations' attention by donning a greige wool dress with matching coat. The coat had a small sable fur collar, and a matching sable fur muff was chosen to help keep the First Lady's hands warm during the ceremony. She wore the muff over long kidskin gloves and, on her feet, wore black heels which she later changed to fur trimmed boots better suited for walking in the snow on that bitterly cold day-- a -7 wind chill was reported at the time of the ceremony. A woman who saw this outfit in the exhibit "Jacqueline Kennedy: The White House Years," reported that what surprised her the most was how thin the material on the coat was when she saw it on display, saying "she must have been freezing!"

Sorry for the poor quality of these photos which purportedly reveal Jackie had a facelift at 60. Of course, she never told anyone if she did or didn't but in Billy Noonan's book, I believe, John was adamant his mother had never had a facelift and it was the media making things up again.

One of her doctors, Dr. Henry Lax, did go on record to say she had approached him for his opinion about having a facelift when she was in her late 40's. He advised her against it saying it would be too obvious and, if anything, she should just have her eyes done--which she did after turning 50.

Any thoughts on if she had a facelift? I think it's so hard to tell as weight, makeup, stress, fatigue can all make someone look older.....

Jackie's Favorite Summer Pudding

This was a summer favorite of Jackie's and her friends.

SUMMER PUDDING

Ingredients

4 cups raspberries
4 cups blueberries
1 cup red currants
3/4 cup sugar
8-10 slices bread with crusts removed

Combine berries with sugar in a saucepan and stew for 2-4 minutes. Let berries cool while lining the bottom and sides of a round, deep, ovenproof dish with the bread. Form a tight lining with the bread. Spoon the cooled fruit over the bread, reserving about 1/2 cup of the juice. Cover the top of the fruit completely with bread.

Next, find a plate that exactly fits inside the rim of the baking dish and place on top of pudding. On top of plate, arrange 3 pounds of weights (Cans of food or juice work well). Refrigerate overnight.

Before serving, remove weights and plate and invert a round rimmed platter over the pudding. Turn the dish and platter over so the platter is on the bottom, then remove the dish, leaving the pudding on the platter. Pour the reserved 1/2 cup juice over the top. Add fresh cream or serve as is for a light refreshing dessert.

Put either 6 tea bags or 6 tablespoons loose tea in a teaball or muslin in a deep mixing bowl with a nice bunch of fresh mint. Pour 6 cups boiling water over the tea and mint, cover and let steep for ten minutes. The tea should be strong because the melting ice will weaken it.

Add 2/3 cup of orange juice and 1/2 cup of lime juice, then pour through a strainer into a pitcher. Cover the pitcher with foil and refrigerate. Jackie liked her tea with no sugar but for those who want it to be sweeter, add 1/2 cup of sugar syrup to the glass when it's poured onto the ice.

*** The sugar syrup is created by bringing 1 cup of water and 1 cup sugar to a boil together. When cool, store in a screw top jar in the refrigerator.

Get inspiration from iconic Jackie Kennedy during her years at the White House. Before she was Jackie Onassis, she was Jackie Bouvier, the debutante, and later, Mrs. Jackie Kennedy, the first-wife fashion icon. She wore shift dresses, pearls on occasion, white gloves, simple pea coats with big buttons, and matching pill box hats.

Step 2
Get a slender floor-length gown. For formal state-dinner events, Onassis would be garbed in magnificent floor-length gowns created by Valentino and Givenchy. She would wear elegant elbow-length gloves. Designer Oleg Cassini described her as the "geometric goddess." Despite her love for French designers, she largely depended on American-born Cassini. He designed a reported 300 outfits for the First Lady.

Tips & Warnings

Have good posture. A reason why Onassis always looked elegant was that she had pristine posture. Her love of ballet may have helped, but posture can be something practiced and developed.

Dress appropriately for each event. When Onassis visited the Pope in 1962, she decided to wear a fitted black, long-sleeve, floor-skimming Oleg Cassini. She still looked amazing, but Onassis knew exactly how to dress modestly. In contrast, she made jaws drop in magnificent gowns for formal White House dinners.

After Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis' death, a maid who had cleaned her home in Martha's Vineyard for several years, told her story to the "National Enquirer" and also provided shots of the interiors. The article did provide some insights as to what Jackie's life was like during summers at Red Gate Farm.

After lunch, she would go biking, waterskiing or kayaking from 1-4 PM. Dinners were early and light and she would often watch movies on her VCR till about 9 or 10 PM before retiring for the night.

Jackie Kennedy had a four-year love affair with Bobby Kennedy that began not long after JFK's assassination and grew so intense that when RFK was gunned down, it was she -- not his wife -- who instructed doctors to pull the plug, an explosive new book claims.

The married senator and father of 11 kids was the former first lady's one "true love" -- and his wife, Ethel, along with the rest of the Kennedy clan, knew about their romance, according to "Bobby and Jackie: A Love Story."

"Everybody knew about the affair. The two of them carried on like a pair of lovesick teenagers," the late Franklin Roosevelt Jr., who served as JFK's undersecretary of commerce, says in the book. "I suspect Bobby would've liked to dump Ethel and marry Jackie, but, of course, that wasn't possible."

The book, which hits shelves this month, also includes recollections of the steamy affair from a host of other Kennedy family intimates, including Pierre Salinger, Arthur Schlesinger, Jack Newfield, Gore Vidal, Truman Capote and Morton Downey Jr.

Author C. David Heymann said he spent nearly two decades researching the tome, even digging through old FBI and Secret Service files about the clandestine couple. Tapes of his exhaustive interviews are available at the SUNY Stony Brook library.

The book's most shocking claims include:
* Six months after JFK's death, during a May 1964 dinner cruise on the presidential yacht the USS Sequoia, Bobby and Jackie "exchanged poignant glances" before disappearing below deck, leaving Ethel upstairs. "When they returned, they looked as chummy and relaxed as a pair of Cheshire cats," according to Schlesinger
* At the Kennedys' Palm Beach estate during Christmas 1964, socialite Mary Harrington saw Jackie sunbathing topless, with Bobby kneeling at her side. "As they began to kiss, he placed one hand on her breast and the other inside of her bikini bottom," Harrington recalled. "I was shocked. It was clear that Bobby was sleeping with his sister-in-law." RFK later told Harrington -- who had her own affair with RFK -- he loved Ethel but "felt just as strongly about Jackie."
* When Commerce Department administrator Kenneth McKnight arrived for a late-evening meeting with Sen. Kennedy in July 1966, he found Bobby sitting on a sofa -- with Jackie "straddling his lap, her arms around his neck."
* At one point, Ethel Kennedy implored family friend Frank Moore to "tell Bobby to stop sleeping with Jackie." Instead, Moore told her to find a marriage counselor.
* Shipping tycoon Aristotle Onassis -- RFK's rival for Jackie's attention -- once threatened to "bring down" Bobby by going public with details of the affair. "I could bury that sucker," Onassis said, "although I'd lose Jackie in the process."

By all accounts, the romance between Jackie and Bobby sprang from their shared grief over the Nov. 22, 1963, assassination of John F. Kennedy. "It was the coming together of a man and a woman as a result of his bereavement and her mental suffering at the hands of her late, lecherous husband," according to Jackie confidant Truman Capote. "It was passionate, [but] it was doomed."

According to Gore Vidal, "The one person Jackie ever loved . . . was Robert Kennedy."
"You had to be deaf, dumb and blind not to see it," recalled Kennedy family friend Chuck Spalding, who often traveled with the pair. Ethel -- who stayed home with the kids in Virginia -- knew about their relationship, but "evidently chose to ignore it," Heymann writes. She was confident RFK would never leave her or their family. Still, whenever Jackie visited Bobby in Hyannis Port, "Ethel would jump up and leave the room."

By mid-1967, Jackie -- who had also been dating Onassis -- was contemplating marriage to him. She agreed to wait until after Bobby's 1968 presidential run. RFK told Pierre Salinger, "She'll marry that man over my dead body."

On March 16, 1968, Bobby announced his bid for president. The next morning, a "morose" RFK called Jack Newfield from Jackie's apartment. "If I had to hazard a guess," the late Post columnist recalled, "I'd say this must have been their last romantic occasion together."

On June 4, minutes after winning the California primary, Bobby was fatally shot by Sirhan Sirhan at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles. Jackie flew to his bedside -- and Ethel allowed her time alone with the dying RFK, according to the book. Bobby was brain-dead, but a distraught Ethel refused to pull the plug, and brother Ted Kennedy was in no shape to make the call, Heymann writes. At 1:20 a.m. June 6, 1968, Jackie Kennedy ordered the respirator shut down and signed the consent form, the book reveals.

That October, she married Onassis.

Tucked away in a sale of Important Design at Wright auction house in Chicago this month, among significant pieces of furniture by Isamu Noguchi, Ron Arad, and other modern and contemporary designers, was a group of eight drawings by Jacqueline Kennedy.

Created for a July 4, 1961, article about the then-new first lady in Look magazine—a cover story that delved into “What you don’t know about Jacqueline Kennedy, the new American beauty”—Jackie’s naïve illustrations candidly capture her husband, John F. Kennedy, in the act of being or becoming president.

Drawn in ink on 8 x 10-inch card stock, the lighthearted images show JFK fresh from the shower and still dipping wet while talking to reporters; resting in Connecticut Governor Abe Ribicoff’s bed; speaking in a casino to a crowd more interested in gambling at the Young Democrats Las Vegas Club; simultaneously shaking hands and listening to a speech while trying to eat a banquet meal; draped in a fallen Idaho flag; getting the strong arm from a couple of Texas rangers; posing for pictures with babies while trying to catch a plane; and burdened with gifts from a Latin American visit.

Given that these drawings were made in the early days of Camelot, one would think that they would find a tremendous interest from buyers, but that was not the case. Consigned by the family of the former president of Cowles Communication—Jackie had either given the illustrations to him or simply abandoned them—only one of the drawings sold at auction, JFK in Governor Ribicoff’s bed, for $3,125. The rest were bought after the sale for roughly $1,875 each, far below the $3,000-$5,000 estimates.

Why wouldn’t the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum, a Kennedy family member, or a fanatic fan want these unique and compelling works? The Sotheby’s sale of odds-and-ends from Jacqueline Onassis’ estate in 1996 had achieved phenomenal results. Speculation on the lack of interest and low prices this time around is that there was no established market prices for artwork by Jackie; but anyone familiar with her 1974 book One Special Summer, which she and her sister Lee Bouvier had collaborated on during a 1951 trip to Europe, would immediately recognize her fanciful style of illustration.It’s ironic that in a time of great interest in her eccentric aunt and cousin, Big and Little Edie Beale of Grey Gardens’ fame, that Jackie’s power of persuasion has lost its luster. Maybe it’s because we have a new Camelot couple in the White House or, sadly, because if you don’t already have a record of sales of your art at auction, you don’t really exist, no matter what the name of the artist or provenance of the collector might be.

A book written by art director JC Suares who worked with Jackie on this project didn't make their relationship seem quite as contentious: He said Jackie was perplexed why she'd been assigned this project as she knew little about his music and wanted to call an animal rescue society because she found the conditions Michael's many pets were living in "absolutely deplorable."

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Michael Jackson crossed swords with a lot of people when he was alive, but perhaps none more important than Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.
The former first lady, in her capacity as an editor at Doubleday Books, secured a coveted book deal with the pop star in 1984, when he was still riding high on the success of his "Thriller" album released two years earlier.
"She was only person in America who could get him on the phone," Stephen Davis, the ghostwriter of "Moon Walk," said in a recent interview with Reuters.
According to a People magazine article at the time, Onassis paid Jackson a $300,000 advance for the book. Davis received what he termed "a generous flat fee."
The book came out in 1988, topped the New York Times Best Sellers list, and quickly sold out of its initial print run of almost 500,000 copies, he recalled.
"That was an extremely successful book. They made money on it," Davis said.
The obvious next step was to print more copies, and then prepare a paperback version. But Jackson, who had total control of the project, vetoed both plans -- annoying Onassis.
"There was so much bad feeling when it didn't go back to press," Davis said. "It wasn't a great experience for her."
Relations between the two cultural icons were already strained, because Jackson had threatened to block the book's publication unless Onassis wrote a gushing foreword.
Onassis, who fiercely guarded her privacy and did not want her name in any book she edited, reluctantly made an exception and turned in a three-paragraph blurb.

Jackie's "Affair" with Marlon Brando Detailed in New Book

C. David Heymann is at it again--another "Kennedy" book, entitled "Bobby and Jackie: A Love Story" will be in stores on July 14, 2009. But what's getting the most attention, so far, is the two day "affair" Jackie purportedly had with actor Marlon Brando. From the NY Post:

MARLON Brando enjoyed two nights of passionate sex with Jacqueline Kennedy and wanted to bare the intimate details to the world, a new book reveals.

In "Bobby and Jackie: A Love Story," which details a purported post-JFK assassination affair between Jackie and Robert F. Kennedy, C. David Heymann has obtained passages from Brando's account of how he hooked up with Jackie in 1964. They were in the first draft of the Oscar winner's 1994 memoir, "Songs My Mother Taught Me," until an editor friend of Jackie (by then also the widow of Aristotle Onassis) at Random House insisted they be cut, Heymann writes.

The first time, "according to Brando, [their] three-hour meal included a good deal of drinking . . . Jackie and the actor danced and drank. During their dance, Jackie, deeply attracted to Brando, 'pressed her thighs' suggestively into his. They danced again, then sat down and began to 'make out,' " according to Heymann.

He relates: "In Brando's words, 'From all I'd read and heard about her, Jacqueline Kennedy seemed coquettish and sensual but not particularly sexual. If anything, I pictured her as more voyeur than player. But that wasn't the case. She kept waiting for me to try to get her into bed. When I failed to make a move, she took matters into her own hands and popped the magic question. 'Would you like to spend the night?' And I said, 'I thought you'd never ask.' "

A week later, Jackie again hooked up with Brando at a Sutton Place apartment he borrowed from a friend. Commenting on Jackie's "boyish hips" and "muscular frame," Brando said, "I'm not sure she knew what she was doing sexually, but she did it well."

But Jackie then ended it. Heymann writes: "Having twice consummated her relationship with Brando, Jackie showed no interest in pursuing him further."
The book from Atria is due next month.

"I first met Jacqueline Kennedy at her house in Hyannis Port the night her husband was being nominated for President at the 1960 Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles, 3,000 miles away. Jackie, who had miscarried after the 1956 Convention, was now pregnant with John and determined to stay put to make sure nothing went wrong. She was wearing a sleeveless summer shift and sandals and her skin actually seemed to glow. 'Come in,' she said softly. 'Let me introduce you to my family.' With her were Janet and Hugh Auchincloss and her half siblings, Jamie and Janet."

"The house was in ordinary people disarray. In the large living room, Jackie had set up an easel near the television. She was working on a painting for Jack’s homecoming. It showed his triumphant arrival at the dock and was cluttered with kids and dogs and a banner which read 'Welcome Back, Mr. Jack.' She had gotten to the beach area. 'There are too many Kennedys,' she said in mock exasperation. 'How can I fit them all in?' She was drinking a glass of rose wine and smoking cigarettes, and she requested not to be photographed doing either."

"Everyone began shouting “Jackie!” when it looked as if Kennedy would make it on the first ballot. She said 'I’m still only 30 years old, and I’ve just lost my anonymity for good. It’s a little scary.'"

"In September I returned with photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt. The air was grey and a storm was brewing that would later turn into a full-fledged hurricane. At lunch, I sat down and Caroline came at me shrieking, 'No, no, no, that’s Daddy’s chair and he’s going to get you with a big stick'—a thought which sent her into a seizure of wild giggles. Jackie, however, was concerned. 'I worry,' she said. 'All those books on child psychology and I’m the type who reads those books talk about how things affect children Caroline’s age. I get this terrible feeling that when we leave, she might think it’s because we don’t want to be with her.'"

"By mid-afternoon, hurricane-force winds were blowing and the power abruptly failed. Jackie and I began to bop around the house lighting candles. By nightfall, an atmosphere of wacky festivity had taken over. Jackie, whose voice in private lost much of its hushed, little girl quality, got out a scrapbook. 'I’ve got to show you this picture,' she said, pulling out a snapshot of an enormous female rear-end bent over so the owner could peer through the Kennedy fence. 'One of our neighbors took it and it’s my favorite picture of the campaign so far.'"

"Late that evening, Senator Kennedy called. When she returned to the living room, she said 'Today’s our wedding anniversary and Jack never mentioned it.' Oddly, I responded 'Well, tomorrow’s my birthday.' It was so off the wall and off the subject that we started laughing and then sat there till all hours talking and drinking wine by candlelight."

"A few days after President Kennedy’s body was flown back to Washington in November 1963, I asked Jackie’s press secretary if I could have one of the prayer cards that Jackie had written out for publication; her secretary called back to say 'yes.' I rushed to the East Wing of the White House, and suddenly there was Jackie holding out the envelope. 'Thank you,' she said, 'for thinking of this.' I was stunned. Every reporter in the world would have given anything at that moment for a private moment with Mrs. Kennedy. I, however, was speechless. I must have looked as stricken as I felt because Jackie smiled and said, consoling me in words that are etched forever in my head. 'Oh, Gail—think back on the good times. Remember the hurricane?'

Somehow, I managed to stumble out on the street, where, for the first time during those momentous days, I started to cry."

A self portrait written from the author’s viewpoint is liable to be a little biased. Written from the viewpoint of others it would probably be so derogatory that I would not care to send it in. I have no idea how to go about describing myself but perhaps with much sifting of wheat from chaff I can produce something fairly accurate.

As to physical appearance, I am tall, 5’7”, with brown hair, a square face and eyes so unfortunately far apart that it takes three weeks to have a pair of glasses made with a bridge wide enough to fit over my nose. I do not have a sensational figure but can look slim if I pick the right clothes. I flatter myself on being able at times to walk out of the house looking like the poor man’s Paris copy, but often my mother will run up to inform me that my left stocking seam is crooked or the right-hand topcoat button about to fall off. This, I realize, is the Unforgiveable Sin.

I lived in New York City until I was thirteen and spent summers in the country. I hated dolls, loved horses and dogs and had skinned knees and braces on my teeth for what must have seemed an interminable length of time to my family.

I read a lot when I was little, much of which was too old for me. There were Chekov and Shaw in the room where I had to take naps and I never slept but sat on the window sill reading, then scrubbed the soles of my feet so the nurse would not see I had been out of bed. My heroes were Byron, Mowgli, Robin Hood, Little Lord Fauntleroy’s grandfather, and Scarlett O’Hara.
Growing up was not too painful a process. It happened gradually over the three years I spent at boarding school trying to imitate the girls who had callers every Saturday. I passed the finish line when I learned to smoke, in the balcony of the Normandie theatre in New York from a girl who pressed a Longfellow upon me then led me from the theatre when the usher told her that other people could not hear the film with so much coughing going on.

I spent two years at Vassar and still cannot quite decide whether I liked it or not. I wish I had worked harder and gone away less on weekends. Last winter I took my Junior Year in Paris and spent the vacations in Austria and Spain. I loved it more than any other year of my life. Being away from home gave me a chance to look at myself with a jaundiced eye. I learned not to be ashamed of a real hunger for knowledge, something I had always tried to hide, and I came home glad to start in here again but with a love for Europe that I am afraid will never leave me.
I suppose one should mention one’s hobbies in a profile. I really don’t have any that I work at constantly. I have studied art, here and in Paris, and I love to go to Art Exhibits and paint things that my mother doesn’t put in the closet until a month after I have given them to her at Christmas. I have written a children’s book for my younger brother and sister, as it amuses me to make up fairy tales and illustrate them. I love to ride and fox hunt. I will drop everything any time to read a book on ballet. This winter I am trying to catch up on things I should have learned before. I am taking typing and Interior Decorating outside of college and learning to play bridge and trying to cook things from recipes I found in France. I am afraid I will never be very successful over a hot stove.

One of my most annoying faults is getting very enthusiastic over something at the beginning and then tiring of it half way through. I am trying to counteract this by not getting too enthusiastic over too many things at once.

This book, written by Shelley Branch and Sue Callaway, is chalked full of awesome advice and Jackie tidbits. I will probably refer to it often and make weekly posts! If you haven't checked this book out yet - I HIGHLY recommend it!
